Every March 8, we pause to celebrate women’s achievements—and recommit to the work still required to make equality real in every home, workplace, and community.
International Women’s Day (IWD) exists because women organized, marched, negotiated, and persisted—often in the face of violence, ridicule, and legal barriers—to demand dignity, safety, fair pay, and the right to shape public life. Today, IWD continues that legacy by shining a light on gender equality, reproductive rights, and the prevention of violence and abuse against women.
A quick look at the roots of IWD (and why March 8 matters)IWD grew out of early 20th-century labor and suffrage movements in North America and Europe. One of the earliest recorded versions was “Woman’s Day,” organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. Soon after, activist Clara Zetkin proposed an international day for working women at the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference—sparking demonstrations and commemorations across Europe. In 1922, March 8 was declared International Women’s Day in the Soviet context, honoring women’s role in the 1917 Russian Revolution, and the United Nations later promoted it globally (including its formal UN recognition in 1977).
In other words: IWD isn’t a “nice idea.” It’s a hard-won tradition powered by collective action.
The energy of 2026: “Give to Gain” + “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”This year, two widely used frameworks pair beautifully:

• The IWD 2026 campaign theme: “Give to Gain”—a reminder that investing in women multiplies outcomes for everyone: families, workplaces, communities, and economies.
• The UN observance focus: “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”—a clear call to move beyond statements and into systems-level change.

Put together, the message is simple: generosity without justice is charity; justice without action is a slogan. 2026 invites us to do both—give what opens doors, and act where barriers remain.
What “Give to Gain” can look like in real life (starting today)Here are tangible ways to participate that go beyond a social post—choose one, and do it on purpose:
1) Give visibility

• Recommend a woman for a speaking slot, promotion, board seat, award, or stretch assignment.
• Publicly credit women’s work in meetings and in writing.
• Buy from women-owned businesses and say why you chose them.

2) Give safety

• Support organizations addressing domestic violence, harassment, trafficking, or legal aid.
• In your workplace: push for clear reporting pathways, real consequences, and trauma-informed support.

3) Give pay equity and opportunity

• Ask: “Are we paying fairly for comparable roles?”
• Mentor and sponsor (sponsorship is advocacy when decisions are made).

4) Give time and shared load

• At home and in teams: redistribute unpaid labor (scheduling, caregiving, emotional work).
• Normalize flexible work without career penalties.

5) Give justice your voice

• Advocate for policies that protect women’s health, bodily autonomy, and freedom from violence.
• Vote, volunteer, donate, and speak up—especially when it’s inconvenient.

2. What would it take to remove that friction—this month, not “someday”?
3. What can I personally give that creates a real gain for a woman or girl?

Then pick one action and put it on the calendar.
