Breast cancer awareness month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  In October, men and women proudly wear pink to support our loved ones who have beaten cancer, the ones we have lost to cancer and the ones who are currently fighting cancer.

Breast cancer is a disease that does not discriminate. It does not care what your race, gender, size, relationship status, vegetarian or carnivore.  Breast cancer effects 1 out of 8 women.  Although breast cancer is rare in men, it does occur.  And yes, there are factors that increase your risk and make you more susceptible to the disease.  But the truth is most people have been affected personally or know someone who has been affected by breast cancer.

In the times of comfort, it is important to love on those affected by breast cancer and to let them know that we are a sisterhood and brotherhood who will stand tall, hold you firmly while we fight the battle with you.  Let them know that they are not alone in this fight.

What are some signs of breast cancer?  Look for lumps or masses that feel different than surrounding tissues.  Other warning signs also includes changes in the appearance of your breast such as shape and size; dimpling, breast pain; inverted or pulling in the nipple, flaking over the breast and nipple discharge.

The truth is many women have no symptoms which is why is important to get regular screenings.  Many doctors recommend that women begin getting mammograms at 40 years old.  Personally, I heard many horror stories about the pain associated with a mammogram and was very hesitant to get it done, but with today’s technology the procedure was painless.  So, forget the myths of the past and get your mammogram.
If diagnosed with breast cancer your doctor will discuss with you the various treatment options that are best for you.  Treatment is generally based on the type and stage of cancer.

Although you can’t change your genetics, there are things you can do to reduce your risk.  What thing can you do to reduce risk?  Eat healthy, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly and AVOID alcohol.

In summary, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the chances that you know someone who is affected by this disease is great.  Offer love and kindness, be sensitive to what they are going through and let them know that “We Love and We Fight AS ONE.”
